Net metering (Small-Scale Embedded Generation – SSEG) allows Cape Town residents to feed excess solar electricity back to the City’s grid and receive credits.
How Net Metering Works in Cape Town
- Daytime: Your panels generate electricity
- Power your home first
- Excess to grid: Surplus exported to City grid
- Nighttime: Draw power from grid
- Monthly billing: Net usage calculated, credits applied

Eligibility Requirements
- Property within City of Cape Town municipal area
- System size: Up to 1MW commercial, 5-20kW residential
- City-approved inverters required
- Bi-directional meter required
Feed-in Tariff Rates (2025)
- Standard residential: R0.78 per kWh
- Peak period bonus: Additional R0.25 per kWh
- Commercial rates: R0.95-R1.25 per kWh
